I graduated from Duke University in May 1997 and still miss my days there. My favorite things were the beautiful campus (especially in wintertime) and the Cameron Crazies. I still get back to visit on occasion and have been seen sneaking into a game or two in Cameron.
Recently, my dad has come to the brink of technological awareness. He hasn't quite gotten there, but with a little help from me, maybe in a few years. I keep waiting for him to get his own homepage, but no success yet. Here we are in a recent picture at his old place. He is the short one. Note the awesome red truck in the background. One of his main hobbies is collecting old radios, specifically tube type radios from the 1940s and 1950s. Check out some pictuers of them: 1 2 3 4 (Special thanks to Judd and Lance Whitehead for the donation of the old Zenith broadcast radio.) Of course, this is nothing new for dad. Just check out this picture, and this one too. You might say this led me to be radio trained at an early age. Here is yet more proof that I was a fast radio learner.
Dad served in the army for a few years in the late 60s in Asmara, Ethiopia. Check out his Kagnew Station Scrapbook. He is recently retired from AT&T and has moved up to Franklin County, Virginia Here is a picture of his log cabin. He has a nice long driveway with lots of yard that needs work. It overlooks Smith Mountain Lake. He even has a new Land Cruiser. I am sure I will have to get a picture of it on here soon.
I am from Charlotte, North Carolina, and St. Thomas originally. If
you are curious about my past, check out some history of Jason to see
some "way too cute" pictures of my earlier years.
I enjoy playing the saxophone, collecting coins, ham radio(I have an Amateur Extra class license and my call is N1JZ), and lots of other stuff. I am a very active scouter. Well, I was, until this whole grad school thing got in the way. I have been to four national Jamborees and look forward to many more. Check out the K2BSA page! I worked there for the 2001 Jamboree. See my me page for lots more insight into Jason. Another interest of mine are my friends. If you are curious, check out my friends page, or a picture of my girlfriend Audra and myself.
So, how was grad school, you might ask. Well, I just finished my (almost) six year adventure in February, 2003. I am glad I
did it, but it sure was a lot of work. I met some quality people and learned a whole lot!
I studied Ultrashort Laser pulses and Atomic Physics. Check out our Group's homepage. It has all the abstracts and
links to all the papers that have been published by our group. I defended my Ph.D. dissertation on December 3, 2002. It is
titled Manipulating Wavepacket Dynamics with Half Cycle Pulses and is 354 of the most exciting pages you can imagine reading.
If you really want to see it, here it is!
Be warned, its a large pdf file.
My real entertainment when in Charlottesville is The Virginia Pep Band. They were my source of fun and enjoyment... with a few other friends thrown in along the way. My sincerest thanks to all of them for making my graduate school experience tolerable. They recently have been kicked out of athletic events (again) by the Orwellian Athletic Department. Best of luck as they continue to fight the good fight against "the man". Of course, the most thanks for the fact that I escaped graduate school with my sanity has to go to my girlfriend, Audra Burchfield. She kept me sane and gave me reasons to smile day in and day out.
News flash! Apparently, I am related to a Japanese anime character named Keel Zeibel. He is a 17 year old with blue hair from the video game, "Tales From Eternia". Who knew?
