Scouting Vocabulary

Here are some important scouting terms defined for parents and the new scouts out there.

Venture:
The older scout program. Typically the Venture Crew participates in high adventure trips or other activities more suited for boys who are a little older.

PLC:
A Patrol Leader's Council. This is a meeting of the boy leadership of the troop. Approximately once a month, only the PLC will meet and not the entire troop. This is a meeting where planning for upcoming events will take place. Only boy leadership should come to this meeting. If unsure if you are "leadership", ask the senior patrol leader.

Order of the Arrow (OA):
A national fraternity of honored campers. This is a members only organization with strong ties to the Native American culture. Boys are elected to the OA by their peers. To be eligible a boy must be a first class scout. The OA is an official part of the Boy Scouts of America.

Roadrunner Patrol:
The roadrunner patrol consists of the scout (boy) leadership of the troop.

Philmont:
Philmont is a Boy Scout Reservation located in Cimarron, NM. This is like the Mecca of boy scouting. Boys (and adults) can go there for a two week trek through the Rocky Mountain wilderness, hiking up mountains that are up to 12,000 feet high. To apply to go, a boy must be 14 years old and first class. This is an extremely strenous trip that requires months of preparation.
